Back to the Southern forests

2023-03-29 | Philippe Campeau

So, it is that time of the year again, when Karen and I need to catch up, shake the winter off (especially after Canada - I’m talking about the extra weight from the food, not the snow) and just have a good time. So, in keeping with a sort of tradition of ours, South we went, to Kara-Alma. Why? Well, we’ve been to Arslanbob a few times and wanted something new, but getting another chance at the tawny owls was too promising to miss. Kara-Alma has the second, slightly smaller part of the famous walnut forest. From our base in a CBT guesthouse and to our host’s dismay -– Why did you come in March, when all is grey!? Come back in May, then there will be birds! –- we enjoyed three days of walking, two in the walnut forests and one lower in the pistachio forest. We were rewarded with loads of activities as birds fought, courted each other (sometimes with success, see below!) and built nests. Three of my four targets showed themselves well. First, we saw two owls, one in flight during [...... read more ]

A plan gone awry?

2021-10-21 | Philippe Campeau

There are some days that are worth talking about. Yesterday was such a day. My friend Jérémie and I decided to go to Ala-Archa before the snow covers everything. Our objective: a small nameless peak, 3393m high, from which we hoped to get a glimpse of the Ala-Archa peak and the Golubina glacier. In principle, it is not so a hard one to climb, just a long day of walking in (still shallow) snow. We took a camera and binoculars with us (you never know), but the goal was different. The peak was waiting. It's good that all plans are made to be changed. It started at the very beginning: Jérémie’s car did not want to start (you know, he has a Niva, and an old Niva at that). She argued, protested and only agreed after an hour. So we sat off late. Then we spent a long time crossing the infamous (and old) pylon-bridge. But this was just the beginning. After the bridge, it became difficult to make even 100 steps forward. It started with the ermine. We saw this cutest of all animals for the first [...... read more ]

2021-01-04 | Philippe Campeau

2020-08-12 | Philippe Campeau

[...... read more ]

2020-06-11 | Philippe Campeau

2020-01-15 | Philippe Campeau

У нас [...... read more ]
